I started writing “You Can Get There from Here back in 1996, but set it aside, thinking the fragments would lead nowhere. Six years later I stumbled across it while flipping through pages in my songwriting journal, and right away I knew I had to finish it, which I did on July 29, 2002.

A friend of mine calls this “the shibboleth song. I reckon there aren’t that many songs with that word in them. Then again, there’s more than one biblical allusion in these lyrics.

This one’s on my first CD, released in late 2002. These days I usually end with the last chorus, rather than repeating the tail end of the third verse.
